Waterfalls on Lake Jocassee, South Carolina

In November 2012, “National Geographic” released a special edition of the magazine called “50 of the World’s Last Great Places — Destinations of a Lifetime.” Among the places included in the issue was the Jocassee Gorges region straddling the North Carolina/South Carolina border. It’s a place where the high Blue Ridge Escarpment bumps rather abruptly into the foothills, creating a concentrated area of waterfalls from the many rivers, streams and creeks needing somewhere to flow. Many of these cascades fall into Lake Jocassee, a deep reservoir with 75 miles of shoreline surrounded by undeveloped, protected hills and forest land. Most of the falls in this rugged landscape can only be reached by boat, and the only public boat ramp on the lake is inside Devils Fork State Park.

Laurel Fork Falls

The creme de la creme of Lake Jocassee waterfalls — the one that’s more singled out than others in guide books and on maps — is Laurel Fork Falls. This 80-foot beauty has three sections. A small pool makes a nice swimming hole at the base of the middle section, if you’re willing to climb up the rocks to reach it. The lower section tumbles into the lake at the end of a long, finger-like cove and can be reached by boat if the the water’s high enough; otherwise, you’ll have to hoof it along the dry portions of the lake bed and shoreline. The best way to see the upper falls is to tie your boat off at the mouth of the cove and take a section of the Foothills Trail to the overlook — about a mile round trip, and highly recommended.

Other Falls

Many of the falls on Lake Jocassee are unnamed — or unofficially named — smaller falls, found at the end of coves on the northern half of the lake. Two of the more spectacular falls with official names are Wrights Creek Falls and Mills Creek Falls. Wrights Creek Falls has two sections, the lower of which plunges directly into the lake at high water levels, allowing you to pull your boat right up to the splashing water. At lower water levels, you can tie off your boat and walk behind the falls. Mills Creek Falls cascades over a sheer rock face, so you can’t pull your boat directly into the falling water, but you can anchor or tie off and swim up to it.

Boat Tours

You can rent a boat from a local outfitter, or you can take a guided tour from someone who knows where to go. Be sure to get a map of waterfall locations if you decide to go it alone; otherwise, you’ll be wasting a lot of gas seeking out waterfalls because Lake Jocassee spreads out in all directions from its wide main body. If you’re willing to spend a little extra, a guided tour will take you directly to the falls. And the guide will meet you at the boat ramp, so all you have to do is show up and hop on. Jocessee Outdoor Center (jocasseeoutdoorcenter.com), near the entrance to Devils Fork State Park, rents boats and conducts guided waterfall tours of the lake.

Whitewater Falls

At the extreme northwest corner of the lake where the Whitewater River flows in, you can’t see the whole of Whitewater Falls from your boat, only its final tumbling rapids. It’s impossible to take in all of Whitewater Falls from one vantage point, but this waterfall is worth mentioning because it’s said to be the highest series of falls east of the Mississippi. The first major section, Upper Whitewater Falls, begins at the top of the Blue Ridge Escarpment in North Carolina; the second, Lower Whitewater Falls, ends at the bottom of the escarpment in South Carolina. Two overlooks, inaccessible from the lake, are worth the drive and the short hike to take a gander at these impressive falls.

Housing: It’s Becoming a Seller’s Market

Housing: It’s Becoming a Seller’s Market

The National Association of Realtors said on Thursday what home buyers in many parts of the United States have known for months: it’s becoming a seller’s market.

The number of homes listed for sale in January fell by 4.9%, leaving 1.74 million properties on the market. That’s the lowest since December of 1999, when there were 1.71 million homes on the market. By contrast, there were 2.91 million homes on the market two years ago at this time.

After adjusting for seasonal factors, home sales rose by just 0.4% in January, to an annual rate of 4.92 million units. Still, that’s up from 9.1% one year ago.

The upshot is that there’s a growing pool of buyers chasing a shrinking supply of homes. If the trend holds, prices will keep going up. At the current pace of sales, it would take just 4.2 months to sell the current supply of homes available for sale, down from a 6.2 months’ supply one year ago.

While inventories typically increase in the spring, the Realtors’ group has expressed growing concerns that sales volumes are being held back by the lack of choice. This is good news for homeowners who have watched home prices drop over the last six years, but it’s bad news for buyers—and for anyone that makes their living selling real estate.

Inventory declines have been the most dramatic in California, Arizona, and other markets that witnessed some of the largest home price declines. Those cities have large numbers of underwater borrowers—people who owe more than their homes are worth—while many others may have equity but aren’t willing to sell because prices have fallen so far.

Investors have also been aggressive in buying up properties that are selling for less than their replacement cost.

Home sales could rise to 5.2 million units this year, an increase of nearly 12% from last year, according to economists atGoldman Sachs GS +1.62%. They base their forecast on household formation and demographics, which both suggest rising demand for housing in the coming years, and affordability measures such as mortgage rates and home prices.

But the economists note that there’s a considerable amount of uncertainty that could make those targets hard to hit, particularly if there’s nothing for would-be buyers to purchase.

It’s as Easy as 1-2-3! Step 1: Breaking Ground on Mountain Laurel

We’ve made creating your family legacy at Lake Keowee as easy as it promises to be fulfilling. After all, over the past two decades, Crescent Resources has created more than 30 lakefront communities here- from intimate enclaves to neighborhoods with swim and tennis amenities. No one knows the inside and out of making the most of life on the lake better than we do.

Crescent Resources and Lake Keowee Real Estate, along with builder Larry Hoeben of CORE General Contracting, Inc. and residential designer Wendy Young-Mefferd of DraftWright, Inc. have made the once-dreaded building process an exceptionally easy experience.

We have made it as easy as 1-2-3! Read more below and check out the pictures from the first home of the Lakeside Legacy Collection, the Mountain Laurel, under construction now!

Call Today for More Information 864-886-0098 or email KeoweeLiving@gmail.com.

A custom residence is a wondrous and amazing effort where literally, a million pieces come together, from nuts and bolts to tile and fixtures to the lamp on the front porch. You can have confidence that the designers and builders at Lake Keowee will see to every detail.

Step 1- Which Homesite to Make Your Own?  Let us help you explore each of the selected properties we’ve just made available. These are among the most treasured on the lake, properties we’ve held off the market for several years. Each as been specifically priced, and today represents enormous value. Let us help you choose by touring each on the water, and the walking the sires as you consider possible locations for your residence and dock. There’s a lot to choose from…and a lot to consider, including views, morning and afternoon light, and the tree cover and foliage. It’s an important first step to take together.

Step 2- Have we got plans for you. For some, Lake Keowee represents the first opportunity to build from the ground up, from the proverbial clean sheet of white paper. To make this the most enjoyable and seamless experience possible, we’ve applied our considerable experience, and the talents of leading local designers to create our Lakeside Legacy Collection. These are plans you can use to build as is, or as a starting point to customize to your own needs and lifestyle. This portfolio draws upon many of the most attractive, and livable, homes on the lake.

Step 3: Building with Confidence.  The attraction, practicality and genuine economy behind the concept of design/build is to develop and evolve a building plan with the designer and builder working in concert. When everyone is on the same page, the builder can commit to a completed cost for construction. This is exactly what we’ve done with the Lakeside Legacy Collection- create a portfolio of designs with approved cost-to-completion. It’s a program especially attractive when owners live away from the lake. Of course, you can always build a custom home plan of your own design, and at your own pace.

OUR OWNERS AT LAKE KEOWEE CAN NOW SELECT A HOMESITE AND A RESIDENTIAL PLAN- AND BE CONFIDENT IN THE TOTAL COMPLETED COST- A COMFORTING AND ECONOMICAL PATH IN CUSTOM RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION.

Tiki Hut Opens for the 2012 Season on Lake Keowee

Turn at the Shell station off the 123 Bypass, drive a little less than a mile, then take a left on the gravel drive. Follow the sound of music and laughter…then quickly and quietly…escape reality. The Tiki Hut, at the Keowee Marina on Lake Keowee, is the “must-go” place for all lake lovers. A members only club (membership available annually $35 per person/$50 per family), this restaurant on the lake is simply so much more than a place to go just on the weekends. Over the last few months, the Tiki Hut has been closed for a remodel and members have been anxiously awaiting the re-opening, which took place last weekend.

Lake Keowee

A Place to Escape Reality

From an aesthetic perspective, members will notice a “simplified, cleaner look” with less clutter, sharp teal blue barstools, and an off-white deck paint that makes the whole place look bright and cheerful. In fact, the whole Marina is undergoing an upgrade; the entire property is being scrubbed, gutted, and updated for locals and visitors alike. Changes to the restaurant include a gutted and re-built kitchen, less contraptions behind the bar, better lighting, surfboards on the walls, and healthier options on the menu.

Surf's Up at Tiki!

What strikes us as exciting about Tiki Hut’s reopening is not just what you can see, but the list of events and entertainment coming this year. 2012 will bring regular Themed Parties (Don’t miss the Sham ROCK the Deck Party on March 17th, wear your green if you don’t want to be pinched!) and Wine Tastings done “Tiki Style,” meaning less hoity-toity formalities and more open-air mingling on the deck!

Weekly events will continue including Mexi-Monday with TikiRitas and Tiki Tuesday with free wings for members. Wednesday Charity Nights will continue to be held to benefit local causes. These are great opportunities to give back to your community, spend time with friends, family and colleagues, all with a lake view. All are encouraged to attend and bring friends as proceeds fill great needs in our community. Karaoke Nights will continue as well, so watch the online calendar! Aussie Pub Trivia has moved to Friday nights at 7:30, so join in for some competition and win awesome prizes! In case you haven’t been, Tiki Hut has a great Sunday Buffet featuring fantastic dishes, and of course your Tiki bartender’s fabulous Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas, even on Sunday.

New Splash of Color

In addition to the regular calendar, there are countless other events on the horizon for the lake season. The biggest event planned so far will be held April 20-21.  The Launch Party for Captain Morgan Black & Customer Appreciation Day is THE launch party for Captain Morgan Black in the Upstate.  Enjoy drinks made by a Mixologist from Texas, Limos, Paparazzi, and more. You don’t want to miss this event!

This weekend, March 10-11, will feature an In-Water Boat Show at the Marina, come check out the boats on Lake Keowee. On March 17 there will be a 5K Race Ending at the Tiki, with over 200 people from as far as Canada running in the race, and of course the Sham ROCK the Deck Party that night as well,  the band starts at 7pm! On March 30, try the “Forks & Corks” Wine Tasting and French Cuisine ($80 per person/$120 per couple).

Entertainment Stage---Headliners to Come

Many of you may have attended the 4th of July concert with our area’s very own Ed Roland and The Sweet Tea Project last year. You will be happy to learn they are coming back to the Tiki Hut this summer as part of a Music Festival on Lake Keowee, how exciting is that!? Other musical entertainment this year will feature DJ’s from Atlanta, Charleston, and Charlotte and bands well-known in the Southeast.

Lake Keowee and the Tiki Hut are proud to be part of tours of the upstate and people from all over the world will be visiting our area this year. The Tiki Hut Catering Division handles both on-and-off-premise events and their event center overlooking the water is perfect for both Corporate and Private Functions. The Tiki Hut’s new manager, Marty Gambino, is new to the area and has headed up the catering divisions for both NASCAR and BMW. The Tiki Hut & their event center will make any event, from birthday parties to company picnics to weddings, something to remember. Their all inclusive services include catering, of course a beautiful lakefront venue, staff, entertainment, and even boats if needed.

You can check out all the latest event updates and information about Club Tiki Hut on their webpage, http://www.clubtikihut.com/ or by calling them at 864-882-0800. Now let’s all go get “Freaky at the Tiki!”
